fire in a firework factory kills five people
The Dutch press reports that on 5 July 2004 a fire in a firework factory near the Italian city of Naples killed five people. The authorities of Giugliano also informed the press that several buildings were levelled by the fire and subsequent explosion. Rescue workers said six people were injured, of whom three seriously.
A fire in 2001 in a fireworks factory in the Dutch town of Enschede killed over 20, injured hundreds and destroyed a huge part of the town. The Netherlands has since introduced a fireworks law with stringent safety requirements for firework production and storage, including the mandatory installation of sprinkler systems. Unfortunately this experience has not influenced legislators in other European countries
