Fire breaks out due to faulty wiring
The Dutch press reports that fire broke out in the Blaauwe Hoeve care home in Hulst on Thursday, 10 March. This was the third time in a few weeks that the care home had suffered a fire.
An electrician was removing a meter, thought responsible for the previous two fires, when it caught fire. The fire was swiftly controlled by the operation of the sprinkler system. The electrician was wounded by the fire and taken to hospital. One of the residents slipped during the subsequent evacuation and was also taken to hospital.
Several European countries already have legislation requiring or encouraging sprinklers in care homes. This is because other measures have proven not to be adequate in care homes, where the sad experience is that a fire can kill many people.
