Kent Fire & Rescue Service (KFRS) congratulates Medway Council following its recent decision to install sprinkler systems in the majority of its new buildings.

The ‘Safer with Sprinklers’ campaign made a major development last week after Medway Council’s sprinkler policy was approved.

Hailed by KFRS as one of the safest authorities in the South East, the Council has made it mandatory to install sprinklers in all of its new schools, sheltered housing schemes and residential institutions.

Representatives from KFRS and Medway Council have been working closely on the new policy, which also considers fitting these life-saving devises in other new buildings and those undergoing major refurbishment, particularly those which are occupied by vulnerable people such as care/children’s homes.

Just earlier this week, KFRS was promoting its ‘Safer with Sprinklers’ campaign yet again at a national level, at a parliamentary seminar at the House of Commons.

Commenting on the ground-breaking decision by Medway Council, KFRS Chief Officer, Bill Feeley said: ‘I have overseen the sprinkler campaign for two years and while we have achieved a number of successes, this major development is testimony to the hard work and belief of our officers. I am delighted that it is gathering such momentum and recognition and we congratulate Medway Council for taking this important step by recording its support for sprinkler systems.’

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Finance, Cllr Alan Jarrett added: ‘Our decision to install sprinkler systems in most new buildings, including new schools, will help to ensure the safety of our residents. We are pleased to support Kent Fire & Rescue Service’s campaign.’

We hope you will continue supporting Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority with this life-saving campaign and look forward to working with you and helping make people 'Safer with Sprinklers'.
