Successful Sprinkler stop West Midlands

‘At about 15:00 on 16th June 2009 a fire occurred at Caparo Aluminium Technologies, West Midlands.

Following an £8m investment in 2003, Caparo Aluminium Technologies operates from a 22,500sq metre leading edge foundry in Stourbridge in the West Midlands.

The incident involved metal ducting in an aluminium foundry involved in the production of engine blocks for Triumph motorcycles and carbon fibre transmission cowlings for Aston Martin.

The fire was mainly contained inside the ducting, however due to the length and location of the ducting near to the roof, some fibreglass opaque light sheeting in the adjoining section of the factory was set alight, threatening to spread the blaze.

The area was covered with high/ roof level sprinklers, with a sprinkler head sited some 2 feet from the affected roof panel. This single head actuated, preventing the fire from taking hold and greatly reducing the fire damage.

The works manager was full of praise for the effectiveness of the sprinkler system.’
