NFSN Achievements Continued...

• 2008 The NFSN formed the Sprinkler Coordination Group, along with BAFSA, EFSN, CFOA, LFB, FM Global, Zurich Municipal and Sprinklers Scotland), ensuring a much more coordinated and consistent approach and message when responding to consultation documents and releasing articles to the Press and Fire Journals.

• 2008 NFSN reconvened the Water Liaison Group, which has nine Water Companies and Water UK in its membership, together with six representatives from the sprinkler sector. The Group has made responses to two consultation documents and resolved a multitude of local issues, whilst ensuring a consistent message to the Industry.

• 2008 NFSN established regular meetings between the Sprinkler Coordination Group and the ABI, contributing to the ABI’s report “Tackling Fire – A call for action” which made significant recommendations to Government about sprinklers in commercial buildings.

• 2009 NFSN participated in the UK Water Industry Research which reported in 2010 and recommended action in respect of potential changes to the Water Industry Act legislation. (This is currently being considered by Defra).

• 2009 NFSN on behalf on the Sprinkler Coordination Group asked to be an interested Party for submitting evidence to the Coroner’s Inquest for the Lakanal House Fire tragedy, and was accepted as an interested party. A statement has since been submitted to HH Francis Kirkham on behalf of the SCG.

• 2009 NFSN joined East Sussex FRS at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, where it was able to speak with most members of the Cabinet on the benefits of sprinklers, and getting its message across.

• 2010 NFSN joined the Business Sprinkler Alliance along with BAFSA, CFOA, EFSN, FM Global and is working to achieve greater business resilience through enhanced protection against fire – specifically through the increased acceptance and use of fire sprinklers in commercial and industrial buildings.

• 2010 NFSN gave significant support to Ann Jones AM in achieving Legislation in Wales through the Domestic (Fire Safety) Wales Measure requiring all new Residential Premises in Wales to be fitted with automatic fire sprinklers.

• 2010 NFSN joined the BSA at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham where it was able to speak with a number of Peers, MP’s and Local Councillors on the benefits of sprinklers, and getting its message across.

NFSN through the SCG, and following correspondence and meetings with DCLG, was able to establish the Sheffield Tower Block retrofit project, which will collect key evidence for informing future decision making about fire safety in existing Tower Blocks.

• 2010-2011 NFSN contributed to the evidence in support of Lord Harrison’s Private Member’s Bill which proceeded through the Lords and has now been taken up in the Commons through Alun Michael MP,

• 2000-2011 NFSN has held at least one Sprinkler Seminar every year in the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, whereby its message is given to Government through Peers and MP’s, via the All-Party Parliamentary Fire Safety & Rescue Group.

• 2008-2011 NFSN gave talks and presentations to numerous organisations, including Building Control, major Business Developers and London Boroughs on the benefits of sprinklers.

• 2011 NFSN along with BSA attended the Lib/Dem Spring Conference in Sheffield where it was able to establish good links with a number of Peers, MP’s and Local Authority Councillors, including the Building Regulations Minister, and gain some significant support.

• 2011 BSA joined the CFOA sponsored Cost Benefit review of BRE’s research into sprinklers in domestic properties, which should see more domestic properties falling within the criteria for demonstrating a cost benefit.

• 2011 The NFSN Vice Chair was appointed as Honorary Administrative Secretary of the All-Party Parliamentary Fire Safety & Rescue Group, which has twenty one members of Parliament and Peers represented.
