Since the creation of our organisation in 1998 by our founder members, Tess Kingham (former MP for Gloucester), Peter Jones (Former CFO Gloucestershire), Peter Holland (CFO of Lancashire) and the late Bernadette Hartley (a political researcher for Tess), the NFSN membership has achieved ‘Life Safety’ successes that our founder members could only have dared to dream about. (On Final Version – add link to show bullet points of achievements).
Today, our members are actively committed to effectively working with both internal and external ‘Key Influencers’ to introduce Standards and Legislation that will safeguard people and the community from the threat of fire.
• 2000 – First success – NFSN won its first campaign on large, single-storey superstores. From January 1st 2000 all such buildings with a compartment size of over 2000m2 have to be sprinklered.
• 2006 The NFSN contributed fully to the consultation review for the Approved Document associated with Building Regulations Part ‘B’ Fire Safety, and BB100 Designing and Managing the Risk against Fire in Schools, which resulted in some significant recommendations on sprinklers, particularly in tall blocks of flats and double bedroomed Care Homes.
• 2007 NFSN was also successful in February 2007, at its Parliamentary Seminar in London, with Schools Minister Jim Knight MP, a former patron of the Network and now a Peer in the House of Lords, announcing that all new schools (save for a very few low risk ones) would be expected to be fitted with automatic fire sprinklers (subject to a risk assessment).
