The spreadsheet showing all those sprinkler related incidents reported to the Secretary is now available to download in pdf format on our downloads page. Sprinkler activation at Humberside factory: Monday 16th February 2015

Humberside FRS reports that on Monday 16th February 2015 a fire occurred in a compressor room at a North Lincolnshire food processing factory. The fire started in a compressor motor in the 15m x 10m room at the plant. The sprinklers in the room activated to extinguish the fire which was recorded as being ‘out ‘ by the time FRS appliances and personnel arrived. A Humberside FRS officer reported that “not only has this activation clearly prevented the fire from spreading and causing more damage, it has also meant that fire-fighters did not have to be committed to a risk area to fight a fire and were only required to enter the compartment to confirm the fire was out prior to turning off the spr

Shirley Towers to get sprinklers

Three Southampton tower blocks are to get residential sprinkler systems to BS9251 installed following a £1m investment by the city council. The move will lead to sprinkler systems being installed in each individual flat, along with some communal areas and bin stores at Albion Towers, Sturminster House and Shirley Towers. The plans for the sprinkler installations have been supported by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Northampton shopping centre 9.2.15

Northamptonshire FRS reports that at 01:45 hours on Monday 6th February 2015 they received a call to a fire in a maintenance room at the Grosvenor Shopping Centre in Union Street, Northampton. The fire is understood to have started when heat from a workman’s grinder set fire to wooden shelving in the maintenance room. Fortunately, one sprinkler head on the Ordinary Hazard, mains fed sprinkler system, operated within the room of origin to control the fire. Fire-fighters wearing breathing apparatus and using 1 hose-reel were then able to extinguish the fire. Damage from the incident was limited to the room of origin only.
