At 13:15 hours on Friday 20th May 2016, London Fire Brigade received a call to a report of fire in an industrial dryer at a 2 storey laundry building measuring 50m x 100m in Acre Lane, SW2. A total of 4 appliances were mobilised to the incident.
On arrival, crews located the seat of the fire as being in the drum of the machine. Later investigation revealed that during the drying process, one towel had manage to become entangled in the drum machinery causing it to catch alight through friction. The fire then spread to the rest of the load in the tumble dryer.
Fortunately the fire was contained to the dryer and immediate vicinity by the presence of a single sprinkler head nearby, fed via storage tank and pump.
Crews extinguished the fire using fire-fighting water from their appliances and were on site for a total of just over two hours. The amount of damage caused was listed as between 11 and 20 m² and none of the 70 occupants at the time of the fire are reported to have been injured.
