Sprinkler save at Inchinnan (Renfrew) engineering facility

October 25, 2014

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have shared information concerning a successful sprinkler activation at a large engineering facility at Inchinnan, Renfrew, on Sunday 26th October. The system is a tank fed wet pipe system using pendant heads.

The factory concerned is engaged in the forging and machining of steel, nickel and titanium components where processes include forging, sand blasting, heat treatment, welding and brazing, machining, metal spray, chemical machining, nickel plating, polishing, penetrant Inspection, packaging, transportation and logistics take place.

At about 11:30 on the day in question in question a fire occurred in the ground floor seals manufacturing area of the two storey office and single story production premises, which in total covers over 50,000 m².

Scottish F&RS deployed a level 2 response and one EPU was sent to the incident. Because of the intricacies of the processes and size of premises, 1 main jet and1 hose reel jet were used for fire-fighting with FRS personnel utilising 12 BA, 8 gas suits and 2 chemical suits.

The fire is still under investigation but reports suggest that only about 60m² of the factory was affected and the number of heads that actuated is still to be determined.

There was some interruption to duty shifts at the facility but business continuity was restored with no impact to customers being reported. None of the 78 occupants is reported to have been injured in the incident.
