Dundee care home sprinkler save
At just before 01:20 in the early hours of Sunday 15th February a fire occurred in a first floor bedroom at a care home in Balhousie, Dundee.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service mobilised three appliances to the incident at the 3 storey building, constructed of block work with internal timber partitions and metallic roofing. Upon arrival it was found that a single recessed sprinkler head in the affected bedroom had actuated and suppressed the fire which was confined to bedding material. Scottish FRS personnel were then able to extinguish the fire and ventilate the room without too much difficulty
It is reported that damage was limited to 16m² of the 965m² building and 46 persons were in the building at the time of the fire. One person was taken to hospital. According to Scottish FRS reports, business continuity was also unaffected.
The sprinkler system is reported as installed to BS9251 with water supplied from a tank via a pump.
