Purfleet warehouse: 12th May 2016
Firefighters were called to a fire at the Tescos warehouse in Purfleet at 06:59 on Thursday 12th May 2016.
The accidental fire was caused by an industrial cleaning machine "catching fire" and firefighters from Grays used breathing apparatus to attack the fire using one hose reel jet. The fire was extinguished by 07:46hrs.
The OIC of the incident reported...'The warehouse did have a working sprinkler system fitted and one head activated directly above the mechanical sit on floor sweeper this prevented the fire spreading, but could not extinguish as the fire was shielded by the floor sweepers' roof. The fire residue was quickly extinguished by attending crews.
Without the intervention of suppression the fire would have spread to a far greater area, a successful Sprinkler save'.
A spokesman for Tescos said: "A fire broke out at our Thurrock depot this morning.
"The fire service dealt with the incident quickly and no one was hurt or injured and depot operations are fully up and running again."
