King's Lynn factory: 10th November 2017
Sprinklers helped contain a fire which broke out accidentally at a massive paper mill.
Staff at Palm Paper’s plant at Saddlebow, in King’s Lynn, raised the alarm on Friday morning.
Crews from King’s Lynn, Downham Market and Terrington were sent to the factory on Poplar Avenue.
Crews using breathing appartus and hosereel jets took 40 minutes to put out what was described as “more smoke than a full-blown fire”.
Norfolk fire service’s group manager Tim Edwards later tweeted: “Sprinkler systems were effective in containing a small accidental fire within Palm Paper, Kings Lynn this morning. Norfolk fire crews ensuring the fire was fully extinguished.”
The huge Palm plant, beside the tidal Ouse, turns waste paper into newsprint, recycling 450,000 tonnes a year. It has also seen a number of fires, including a blaze in October 2016 which took 80 firefighters to put out and cost the company £11m.
